How did you determine what you were passionate about? Life teaches you. You have to listen twice as much as you speak. In listening you will innately develop a strong sense of self. It's key to understanding and properly placing your passions. Personally, I believe in God. I cannot separate my faith from any experience. So I would say that God will show you. Some may believe in a "higher power" or "the universe"...whatever. What I know for sure is that you can live in a place where you don't have to look for your "it," but your "it" will come to you. The key is in avoiding the danger of misplaced passions. No matter what I've been involved in, the exciting element in it for me has always been people. I am passionate about people because my purpose is connected to people. Once I discovered that, my question was, what is it that I am supposed to deliver? What do people expect from me? What do people demand from me? What demand have I been equipped to supply? When you ask the right questions, you can get the right answers. That is how you connect the dots in life For me, I realized that success is not about money, fame or fortune. Those can be by products of success but that is not success. It's about making a difference in the lives of people. This is about me, right? It's about living your divine purpose. That's success. Many people think that success is about money and money makes you wealthy. It doesn't. I've been around people with money all my life. I know the inside and outside. Real wealth is having the resources (people, places and things) you need in order to live out your purpose and then some overflow. It's a mindset...a spirit. That's a lot, huh? I know. I know...but seriously, this is where the preparation came.
What challenges have you overcome to pursue your dreams?
Consistency and Focus! For me, consistency and focus are foundation elements of anything built! I often teach that the hardest thing to do in the business - in life - is to be consistent. Why? Because life itself isn't consistent. However, to find the balance of consistency is so essential to stability. Also, focus is key. Maintaining your focus works in direct complement to maintaining your consistency. I learned that I had to make it a life principle. I had to get up and focus every day. This may come...that may go. People are with you...then they leave you. However, in the midst of it all, what are you creating? What does it look like? What is your vision? What is your dream? What is your motivation? You have to ask yourself...I had to ask myself questions like these in order to carve out the picture of my dream that I might build a reality. In building the reality you have to face some harsh truths along the way. You can either face the truth or avoid it but it will always be there. Truth will challenge you. However, being truthful with and accountable to your vision and your dream will cause you to become a person of consistency and focus. That is how you build value and I often say, "become a person of value and influence will follow."
How do you stay focused and productive in your area of passion?
Practice and persistence. You have to do it every day. You have to refocus every day. You have to do something that is motivated by your passion and connected to your destiny every day. Perfect practice makes perfect performance. Yes, I believe that perfection is attainable. Striving for perfection will cause you to be a person whom lives according to standards. Every day meet your standard and when you've reached a level of mastery...set a new one at a greater dimension. These are things I've learned along the way. I've had many failed attempts to get it right. I've had many set backs. I've done things I'm not proud of. I've mismanaged some things and people along the way. However, you have to remember that your destiny doesn't die until you do. You are responsible for getting there. You are responsible for your passion. The moment you make other people responsible you lose your place of accountability to your your own process which produces your product. That said, what keeps me focused and productive is I've owned my passion and I'm committed and accountable to the process. There are some days that are easier than others. However, even if I have to recommit every day, I will. After all, in this business we deal with people...and that ain't easy! LOL The awesome thing is, as you engage and grow, God will send the right people in places & spaces in your life to help you stay committed; such as my business partner, Michael Weston. That's the beauty in it. There are pros and there are cons...highs and lows...but in the midst there is a balance in it all. That's the place to live in!
