Shalae Madison is a photographer and the owner of S.Mad Photography
How did you determine your passion?
It was a hobby at first that grew into love. I was a film intern around the time I got into photography. I bought my first "expensive" camera so that I could shoot short films. I had a two week intern assignment in New York ( I was from Maryland ) and I would just take pictures with my new camera around the city. The more I took pictures the more I grew to love it. It was an escape for me, therapeutic, bc around that time I was heavily popping pills and dealing with depression. Photography saved my life in a way and I loved it.
What challenges have you had to overcome?
I had challenges that seemed impossible to overcome; like getting
bookings and getting them consistently. I just remained persistent. I worked hard, taught myself how to shoot, took free gigs which led me to grow and have more of a clientele. There were days I went without food, because I was relying solely on photography. February of last year my car got repossessed because I only had photography, I didn't have a lot of clients and sometimes I would rely on a gig or two in order to at least pay the car note even if I couldn't afford gas or food or clothes, but clients would cancel. I never gave up though, I continued to get better and push myself.
How do you stay focused?
I constantly remind myself that while this is my passion it is
also my livelihood and my career and if I'm not shooting I'm not
making money. I try to stay focused, and determined everyday to
build my brand and clientele.
