Corey D. James is a man that is on a mission to help our youth become the best they can possibly can be. In his new book "Painting Pictures: Reframing The World Of Inner City Youth," he is chronicling his experiences working with kids in the inner city and how to get the community involved in changing the conversation about regarding our youth. Corey is originally from New Jersey, and currently works for Rutgers helping with their pre-college program for future scholars.
Initially, Corey worked with assisting adult educational issues. Shortly after, he transitioned to working with youth, and that is where he found his true calling. It was actually an altercation with one of the particular youth who had been deemed "troubled," that he saw transition to a success story. This inspired him to do more advocacy work and champion more for young people .Throughout his experiences, Corey came up with the concept for his new book "Painting Pictures" - book of encouragement for youth, as well as adults to improve education in the inner city.
The main take aways that Corey wants people to get from the book are the amount of trauma instilled in the youth of the inner city, and how dispelling stereotypes can help the community. "If community members take the time to become advocates and role models (rather than judging), many of the negative things that occur in the lives of our young people can be prevented. Every kid needs a champion," says James.
Corey's book has been endorsed by Dr. Cornel West as a must read. If you would like to purchase the book it will be released on May 1st at all major retail stores.
