How did you determine what you were passionate about?
I originally got into fitness as a way to look better and feel better about who I was. The drive to see what I wanted to see in the mirror was my primary motivation and is what honestly kept me going and continues to drive me. As I transformed my body, I soon felt compelled to help friends and family do the same. Shortly after, I became certified to professionally help the masses with my type of personal training in various gyms and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Houston. I now wake up every day and do what I truly love by providing affordable quality personal training in a private setting. Everyone is welcome at Almost PerFit Fitness.
What challenges have you overcome to pursue your dreams?Training on my own outside of the gym started at ground zero and bank account zero. I was training at a nearby gym but, because their service was so expensive I trained very few people. I decided that I should offer affordable training out of the gym and in a more private setting because most of my existing clientele, which I wanted to retain as I transitioned out of the gym, didn’t like the commotion of the gym or the impersonal nature of traditional group training. I started in a public park close to my apartment and then the apartment gym after realizing no one really used it. As my demand for clients increased, I decided to take on a 3rd job at Home Depot so I could save up enough money to buy my own equipment and rent a small space that could accommodate my training. With $800 saved from 3 months of Home Depot warehouse labor checks I secured my first rental spaces first and last month’s rent and purchased some used home fitness equipment via Craig’s list. I didn’t have any additional funds to pay someone to professionally reupholster the badly damaged vinyl on the equipment’s seating and padding so I learned how to upholster it by studying videos on YouTube and did it myself. I then sanded and painted the equipment and walls of the studio and on that day Almost PerFit Fitness was real. We officially opened on January 9,2015 as my birthday present to myself. I then quit my job at the gym and home depot to free up time for me to train in Almost PerFit. But I still maintained a substitute teaching and weekend club bouncing job to make ends meet in the beginning. As business began to grow in the months that followed I gradually stopped working both of my extra jobs and started to focus 100% of my time to Almost PerFit Fitness. Two years later we are blessed to say we are still in business and have expanded in size and equipment, both quality and quantity, three-fold.
How do you stay focused and productive in your area of passion?
Fitness is life for me, every morning I wake up just blessed to be a part of it. Everyday I’m either training my clients, myself or both and communicating with online clients about their training and I love every minute of it. Its surreal to now be someone that people regard as synonymous with fitness and the fact that my passion has literally become my paycheck is mind blowing. This reality I live daily was my life goal so I’m living the dream and intend to work tirelessly to never wake up from it.
